A sly rabbit will have three openings to its den
Chinese Proverb
House rabbits are companion animals that were formerly kept outside in backyards, away from people. They are the same animals that were decended from wild European rabbits that were bred for meat and fur. A few humans who kept them would came to realize they were missing out on the charms of these intelligent & sensitve creatures. These animals could just as easily be adapted to living with humans as dogs or cats were thousands of years ago. Around 1986 a group of Bay Area California humans formed a group to promote living with rabbits and educate other humans in the care & appreciation of these animals. Some of their needs are different from other pets, but accomodation is easily made.
The House Rabbit Society recommends your companion rabbit be housed indoors. A hutch rabbit cannot possibly receive as much attention as a rabbit within the home. After all, how much time do you intend to spend in the yard? Personalities emerge when your rabbit gets to know you. Their potential is realized when you enjoy each others' companionship. Rabbits are clean & quiet & are adaptable to human schedules.
Rabbits, unlike dogs & cats, are prey animals. Dogs & cats are descended from predators. This difference is important in understanding your rabbit's behavior. Our familiar expectations & experiences with those animals do not always translate in rabbit care when you have a rabbit living with you. These differences can work to your advantage when you share your house with a rabbit. Find out how here.
Are rabbits soft and fuzzy? Most definitely. Are rabbits as cuddly as they look? Not necessarily. Is a rabbit more like a cat or a dog? Neither. A rabbit is like a rabbit.
